Publisher's Pen: Releasing the Perfect Person Within
This title is an offshoot of a workshop that I attended recently, entitled, “Releasing the Perfect Woman Within,†by a support group empowering women of all ages. They gave me permission to use it on this site.
We started by exploring what society tells us what a perfect person is, and came up with mostly external descriptions, many with negative connotations. Subsequently, when we discussed what we felt was essential to attaining perfection, we discovered the list to be internal qualities, along with character.
Having been given several pages of adjectives and their definitions, we were told to come up with one or more sentences describing ourselves. The adjectives were positive, inspiring and empowering. They were adjectives that we normally might not use to describe ourselves for fear of appearing vain, but they forced us to see the good in ourselves, and it was truly exciting.
Needless to say, we completed the exercise feeling empowered about ourselves and inspired about others in the room. This was a safe place. It was a positive place. And above all, it was FUN!
Here’s what my statement looked like. The adjectives that I took from the descriptions on the sheets are underlined:
“I am calm, caring, competent and creative. I use encouraging words with a kind and gentle grace. I have spontaneous peace.â€
The mission of this site and the purpose of this issue is to create a positive and safe place with fun ideas. There is no comparing or competition here. We are all striving to improve our lives and the lives of our children.
May we take the time to see the inner gold in ourselves and let it flow to our children, so that they may see their own inner gold, shining it before others.
Smiles,
Elaine

Empowering Parents and Teachers:
Here is where we get to the meat of releasing the perfect part of ourselves that helps to truly empower others. What better place to start than with the future generation of our families, our businesses and nations all over the world. Follow this easy lesson plan and have a lot of fun!
Before beginning the lesson, reinforce the ground rules:
- This is a safe place to talk without judgement;
- Only positive comments are allowed;
- The object of the lesson is to have fun.
Releasing the Perfect Person Within Lesson Plan
- Discuss what students think it means to be perfect at home, school, or in the outside world. Make a list of the answers. Do the answers reflect what others expect, or what we expect of ourselves?
- Next, decide what values are important for us to have. These would be values that make us feel like a good person inside, and are the kind of character traits that we look for in friends.
- How are the two lists different? How are they alike?
- Have students divide up into pairs. Give students the “Perfect Person Thesaurus.†Each student must make up 3 compliments about his/her partner using one of the words from the thesaurus. Have students underline the word they used from the thesaurus.
- Tape the compliments to individual desks or all around the room. Remind students to look at them often. Write new compliments weekly or monthly.
